In Peoria, Arizona, firearms have been around for centuries. The city was founded in 1867 by the Pecos Indians and was named after General Mariano Arroyo. It lies on the east side of the Salt River Valley and is bordered by the cities of Phoenix to the northeast, Tempe to the northwest, Glendale to the south, and Scottsdale to the west. The name "Peoria" originated from Spanish settlers' pronunciation of "Peyo-a", meaning "place where game is shot." In 1974, Peoria was chosen as one of sixteen communities along with Lancaster ( Pennsylvania), Decatur ( Alabama), Garden City ( Kansas), Johnstown ( Pennsylvania), Muskegon Heights ( Michigan), Oak Harbor ( Washington) and Payson ( Arizona) to be served by Amtrak's rail line called Desert Storm Corridor service between Phoenix and points northward along Interstate 10. This helped revive downtown businesses which were lost during previous decades due to commuting costs associated with other jobs in Phoenix or Tucson. As part of Amtrak's continuing effortsto serve rural communities throughout America through increased centralization of passenger services within Amtrak zones rather than scattered operations across state boundaries – including Albuquerque/New Mexico/ rancherias serving central Oklahoma – Peoria has seen continuous growth since 1990 despite having no metropolitan area designation outside Amtrak’s San Francisco Bay Area operation.
