In 1906, following development near South Waterfront Airport by Harry Jaffe and others, Mayor Charles Goodyear designated streetscape features including an " alleyway" between two lines of business blocks (now First Avenue North and Third Street East) as "Heinegger Boulevard." Goodyear also enlarged loop 101 by adding I-10 east from Loop 101 south to Peoria Boulevard/Route 66 (now Route 66 Business), connecting with predecessor U.S. Route 20 (later Interstate 10) just south of downtown via self-cleaning lanes across I-10's median strip during late night hours only after heavy morning traffic had passed away on I-10 northbound; this allowed businesses adjacent to Loop 101 without having their lobbies linked directly with arterial roadway arteries serving other parts or cities such as Phoenix or Tucson during those early days when all interstates were planned as single open roadways feeding into an interstate highway system controlled by Congress rather than by individual states - something not anymore possible since Interstate 10 was first built over several decades ago!

The town was named after General George Peoria, an American general during the Mexican-American War. The first store in Peoria was opened by Wm. Halsey and his son William in 1851. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was born here and he lived for a time in Peoria before moving to Springfield, Illinois.
