In 1847 General Jamespositively erected a wharf at present day downtown Peoria so that goods could be brought into town from nearby farmers' markets In 1850 George Washington Hume opened an inn and hotel known as the Capitol Hotel which became one of the largest hotels west of Cincinnati On December 4th 1860 Apache Chief Geronimo attacked Major John Custer's column near Prescott Valley killing nine soldiers including Custer before being driven off by Australian forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Oxenford geronimo eventually surrendered at Bforbidi Peaks about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of present day Peoria The Civil War started here when Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Arizona Territory through Hereford Valley on February 14th 1861 with 10,000 Confederate troops supported by several hundred horsemen under Brigadier General Jesse Evans This invasion led to three days of combat against outnumbered Union forces before Early retreated back across Cooke River without achieving anything definite On April 12th 1861 Colonel John Taggart arrived with 1,500 cavalry reinforcements from California to quell this rebellion but also lost many troopers including Taggart himself When hostilities ended President Abraham Lincoln appointed General Philip Sheridan as military governorof Arizona Territory giving him authority over all troops within its borders Including those loyal to Mexico There were no major battles fought until late 1862 when Battle Of Yuma occurred near Buckeye Creek outsidepresent-day Scottsdale Because Confederates had control over most routes leading into centralArizonaandnorthwest outintoMexico Army patrols occasionally located Mexican sympathizers living among Arizonans who would carry out clandestine activities such as helping rebels escape or providing food for them
