Peoria, Arizona is home to the now defunct Peoria Arsenal Ammunition Plant. The plant was founded in 1915 and was used to produce rifle ammunition, artillery ammunition, and pistol ammunition. The plant closed in 1968, but the remains of it are still standing today. During its time as a functioning arsenal, Peoria Arsenal produced over 2 million rounds of ammunition. Many of these rounds were used in World War II and the Korean War.

In 1984, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to create Winchester-Winchester Canada Inc., which continued production of ammunition until 1999 when it merged again with Remington Arms Corporation to form Remington-Rand Corp.

The first Europeans to visit Peoria were French traders and missionaries in 1769–70. At the time there were only about 100 people in Peoria. The town site was chosen because it had a good water supply and excellent grazing for livestock. In 1847 Peoria was annexed by Chicago as part of the large area that became Cook County. Peoria's growth came from its location as an important transportation hub on the Chicago Great Western Railroad and its status as a bedroom community forChicagoans during World War I and World War II. After World War II, industry left for greener pastures in other parts of Illinois but Peoriians kept their heavy industry going until 1957 when it closed all but two of its plants employing over 4,000 people including one that made vacuum cleaners. In 1957 voters approved an ordinance establishing a City Council with eight members instead of five members then followed by a referendum vote to re-establish mayor/council government with voting privileges for residents over age twenty-one who resided in single-member districts rather than being elected at large as they are now

The area now known as Peoria was part of Apache Indian Territory until 1881 when it became part of the newly created US territory of California. In 1865, Major General Winfield Scott garrisoned troops at Fort McDowell to protect the Mexican border from raids by Apache Indians and othernomadic bands seeking passage to Canada or Mexico City through this region. As America's western borders shifted with Mexico more frequently becoming porous due to new land grants (the Compromise of 1850), Governor James K. Polk ordered military forces stationed at Fort McDowell be withdrawn in 1867 so that McDowell could be used for civilian purposes – an order that was not followed until 1880 when military forces were reactivated again to deal with a renewedraid by Apaches led bychief Manuel de la Hoz y Ochoa (). In 1870 Cochran organized 4 companies from Yuma County militia[1] and began building a town on the east bank of the Rio Grande opposite Prescott on behalf of what would eventually become Phoenix (which unsuccessfully attempted to gain city status from Peoria in 1912). By 1870–71 Tucson had become one of Northern Arizona's largest towns with up 20 stores, 5 hotels & 2 restaurants; only two years later Tucson had its own election board & first school district
Peoria is a city in Southern Arizona and the county seat of Peoria County. The population was 175,821 at the 2010 census. The name Peoria comes from the Apache Chief's village there, which means "place of plenty." The first permanent European-American settlement in what is now Phoenix was made by Captain James H. Cook on July 14, 1823 while exploring America's Pacific Northwest. He named his new land "Eagle Mountains" after his ship HMS Eaglet. A post office called Cooks Valley was established in 1827, but it was discontinued in 1828. In 1833, Juan Bautista de Anza founded the Rancho Santa Fe Mexican Cattle Company here and began to run cattle drives through Tucson into central Arizona. In 1840, John Wesley Powell explored this area and named it after himself when he found an old map of this area that showed him that the Eocene rock formations near Tucson were older than any other place he had ever seen on earth! This discovery led to the beginning of modern day mining operations inArizona! By 1850, over 150 mines had been opened throughout much of central and southern Arizona! Mining has continued to be a major industry in Peoria ever since!
