This group consisted of merchantsdan Russian immigrants surnamed Kuznetsov brothers Ivan (John)and Dmitry (David), clerks Arkadi Chornyakovskii (Alexander)and Mikhail Andreevich Kuznetsov (Michael), builders Vasilii Polyakovskii (Vladimir)and Aleksei Rybkin (Alec),oters Semenovskij brothers Pavel (+ Petrovich)and Ivan Juhanssons (John), soldiers Mikhail Sokolskii (+ Nikolai Ivanovich Sokolskii), Dmitri Karamazov (+ Dmitriy Pavlovich Karamazov)and Stepan Mikailovich Chernyshynskyj (+ Stephan Antoniyevich Chernyshynskyj). For many years this small settlement functioned primarily as a stopover on their journey upriver towards wagon trains headed inland towards goldfields at Sutter's Valley or Oroville City. By 1870 however most residents had either emigrated or migrated away due to tough times following Russia's civil war that year which saw some key figures killed including prominent banker Fyodor Dostoevsky whose novel Crime & Punishment tells the story of one such individual . Beside economic difficulties also arose social unrest caused by frontier lifestyle changes brought about by Americanization which led to competition among various groups for access to resources unavailable before - such as women becoming farmers unable formerly onlyto do household chores; young men taking up mining jobs instead of pursuing higher education; cattle ranching displacing Indian traditional lifestyles; white Americans coming into contact with Native Americans whom they viewed as primitive animals/cultures/people etc.. As these factors persisted residents gradually assimilated newer arrivals while maintaining close ties with their Russian counterparts throughout much OF Arizona until World War II when Russians abruptly withdrew from North America after being forced out by Stalin's communist regime seeking refuge abroad….As hostilities escalated between US military forces occupying Japan vs Imperial Japanese Army units stationed inside northeastern Arizona Ulysses S Grant ordered all Russian nationals living east OF Phoenix rounded up on 4th October 1912…..Most were taken southeastward into concentration camps at Harlan County near Dayton Ohio……Only 2 individuals – Lazar Huseinovic+ Stanislaus Griggs– managed To escape but were picked off hitchiking back home after being betrayed by two fellow POWs……All others were executed…After WWII many families returned TO AZORA BUT WITH NEW FAMILY MEMBERS AS AMERICANS THEY REFUSED TO ASSIMILATE WITH THE OLD RUSSIANS BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T WILLING TO BE SUBJECT TO COMMUNISM LIKE THEIR PARENTS WERE….After independence most Azorean Families slowly assimilated although there remain some who maintain strong connections w/Russian Heritage
