Payson is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 705 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. Payson is located on the Santa Catalina Mountains and has an elevation of 5,853 feet (1,815 m). The name "Payson" comes from the Apache word paski meaning "upstream" or "on high". The first permanent European settlers in what became Payson were two prospectors named John Wesley Powell and Edward S. Beardsley who were also trail builders in 1869-1870. They found earthen banks, waterholes and mineral rights near present-day Hatch Road which they named Inyo Creek after General James Wilkinson's deputy at Yuma Barracks during the Mexican–American War. In 1884, A.C. McClintock started a cattle ranch in present day Payson that would eventually become one of the largest ranches in Arizona with over 5000 head of livestock and 12 miles (19 km) of trail leading to it from central Tucson running west to east. McClintock was an early promoter of self-sufficiency for farmers through his land management practices such as using adobe bricks instead of mortar for construction and irrigation systems that allowed him to produce more crops than he could sell without being forced to buy supplies from outside sources; this system later became known as "McClintockism". In 1892 William Hickenlooper founded Wagon Wheel Loans Company which became one of America's most successful merchant banking enterprises; it was based in Phoenix until 1959 when it moved its headquarters to Chicago where it remains today as Wells Fargo Bank NA.). Hickenlooper also developed what is now called Park Avenue which runs north-south through downtown Payson between Third Street and Valley View Drive; he named it after himself because he saw parallels between Prescott's fashionable Main Street along thePrescott River valley while Park Avenue ran parallel but higher upriver as if linked by a Chain Link fence into some larger purpose or design beyond his understanding (). During World War I local citizens raised money for various causes including helping feed Europe with food donations acquired from markets around Arizona Territory; following hostilities ended all private contributions stopped although individual citizens continued to give money back into coffers until 1924 when state law changedigeased prohibition against giving money directly to political candidates making donation tax free).
