The first high school opened for students in 1959. Payson is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, located about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. The first person to settle in what is now Payson was George A. Payson, who surveyed the area for the Arizona Mining Company in 1887. The company's president, John Wesley Powell, visited Payson in 1892 and recommended that the town be named after him. The name stuck and Payson became a thriving center for mining until the late 1800s when cowboys and miners replaced farmers as mainstay of local economy. In 1886, Anson Phelps Dodge founded the Phelps Dodge Mining Company here with $1 million from Andrew Carnegie along with other investors to prospect for silver and gold on site that had been leased from Don Carlos De Soto back in 1875. The Mineola vein was found but not developed until 1903 when Harry Parsons discovered an additional 6-mile (10 km) of ore body at Depth 1/2 below ground intersecting both veins at right angles to each other which he called "The Dragon's Tail." This new find helped make Phelps Dodge one of America's leading silver companies by 1907. Dodge also donated land to build a high school here which opened in 1912; today it is known as Eastern Arizona University (EAU). Other early businesses include Jardine Bros., a grocery store and post office opened on Main Street in 1906 by Wm. Hildebrandt Jardine; First National Bank built on Sixth Avenue near US 95 in 1909; Peabody Coal & Coke Co., founded 1895 by Alfred Peabody as one of America’s first big coal companies; Heermann Drug Store opened 1922 on Third Street NE; Henry Kaiser Electric light operated 1923-1946 from two poles next door to old First National Bank building on Fourth Avenue NE before it was moved across Fourth avenue into Kaiser Stores Building next door (now UAAP building); Roy Rogers Navajo Veterans Memorial Museum opened 1938 inside old Masonic Temple east of I-10 south of town limits During World War II most residents evacuated their homes during July 1944 when mines were bombed around this area resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure including water systems, schools and churches etc.; many structures still stand today such as Post Office Annex #4 just outside city limits where mail would be delivered daily In 1946 after Kirtland Air Force Base closed adjacent buildings were razed leaving only foundations remaining while commercial buildings were relocated inland

During World War II, many businesses closed due to rationing but some managed to stay open such as the Rodeo Drive Inn which reopened after the war. In 1949, Payson became an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council system. At that time it had a population of about 30,000 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1960s through 1970s with a population of over 200,000 people by 1980. However, during the early 1990s there was significant decline in population due toopeseconomic problems including crime and economic recession
