Payson, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The name of the town comes from Chief Payson's order to build a fort in this location in 1881 after he discovered gold near the current site of Tucson. Payson was an important trading post on the Santa Cruz River and had several businesses including a distillery and a bank. The first store in town opened in 1887 and it was named "Payson Brothers." In 1907, Payson became the county seat for Pima County when Tucson moved from its original location to what is now east Phoenix suburb of Glendale. After World War II, steel production increased around Tucson so much that mills closed throughout most of northwestern Arizona but one still operated until 1984 called Alcoa Steel Works which produced mostly cans and other metal products for aluminum cans and other items such as car parts In 1951, Navajo men working at Alcoa were massacred by Apache warriors during a campaign against Apaches outside Nogales; this event is known as The Massacre at Nogales. The townsfolk raised money to buy their land back along with smaller communities in retaliation including White Sands Junction (1958), Sahuarita (1959), Cochise (1960), Carrizo Springs (1962), Prescott Valley (1963) and Window Rock (1964). After years of conflict over land ownership among ranchers, miners, developers etc., all but two of these towns merged into then-new Payson on August 15th 1969 when they voted overwhelmingly to become one entity with no individual rights or political subdivisions within their boundaries anymore - effectively becoming an incorporated city under state law without any representation from either side Today much of what once made up those separate communities remains scattered acrossundeveloped areas adjacent to Interstate 10 with only faint traces remaining from where each community once stood

Mexican ranching activity increased during the early 20th century with white settlers coming to take over land near the then undeveloped town of Winslow east of Apache Junction for cattle operations and farming purposes. During World War I, most local servicemen served in duty overseas including many residents who worked on military airfields such as Love Field Airport which served as home base for Proctor Air Service Squadron 7 (later Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). After World War II ended, many veterans returned home and began developing new economic interests outside of agriculture or ranching such as real estate development or motel/motel management services particularly in Phoenix suburb Scottsdale where Payson now stands adjacent to University Hills Shopping District within walking distance of several restaurants including Joe's Pizza & Pasta,Chili's Grill & Brewery (now known as Azteca),Qwikfresh Market,Carta Blanca Mercado Mexican restaurant In 1957 there were only 350 people living in Payson; by 1990 it had more than 12,000 residents with a total economy size exceeding $1 billion including services provided by its universities ($US71 million) and other businesses ($US2 billion). Payson is a small, unincorporated community in Cochise County, Arizona. It was located on the Sonoran Desert Plateau east of Mohave City and west of Nogales. The name Payson comes from the Apache word Pa-san-a meaning "place where they hunted."
