Payson, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The name means "place of the Paiute." The first Europeans to visit Payson were the Spanish in 1820. They named it San Carlos de Flagstaff after their captain's flag ship. In 1886, when Apache Chief Geronimo attacked the town and killed six people, General Wesley Clarke ordered his troops to march through Payson and scatter Apache resistance into hundreds of miles of open desert. This event is commemorated by a statue of General Wesley Clark on Main Street in town. Payson was founded as an agricultural community in 1907 by J.D. Payne and his wife Fannie Payne as a way to provide food for their families back home in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. The local Arizonan ranchers soon became interested in land here and began buying up parcels of various sizes from farmers and ranchers across the state for subdivisions that would become townships or villages called "Gaarri". Finally, on November 2, 1912 – just days before World War I started – Payson incorporated as a city with a population of 1,600 people under Mayor John Geddes'. A new City Hall was built on Fourth Street between Main and Grant Streets during World War II while all other municipal services were located at First National Bank Building on Seventh Avenue between First and Second Streets due to wartime rationing regulations which forced businesses closed during war times without any notice or compensation to their customers or employees. On December 8th 1948 – only two years after incorporation – Mayor Geddes resigned effective January 1st 1949 due to health reasons leaving Vice-Mayor Wm Hickey as Acting Mayor until he could be elected at an election set for February 6th 1949 which he won easily becoming the first African American mayor of any U S City or County having previously held no elective office whatsoever prior to that date! In 1960 Payson Voters approved annexation by Mesa because Mesa had been growing rapidly eastward adjacent to its limits (see: Mesquite annexation). As partSof mesa annexation there was some concern about how this would impact cultural diversity within what had traditionally been considered Navajo territory since there were no formal boundaries between Navajo Nation proper (to the south) and Cochise County (to the north) until then; however no such boundary existed once Phoenixville annexed gaarri lands eastward into Mesa Municipal Limits! Today much like many small towns throughout America - including myself - we continue our traditions & values despite challenges faced daily... Payson was founded in 1867 by James W. Payson and his brother John Payson. The town was named after General John Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1902, Payson incorporated as a city. The first post office in Payson was established in 1868, and continued to be operated until it closed in 1915. The first store opened in 1869, and the first telephone line went up in 1912. In 1907, the first movie theater opened here. In 1912, Payson became one of the towns that joined the Navajo Nation. Other towns that joined were Window Rock and Williamsburg. This madePayson one of the smallest cities on the Navajo Nation at that time. However, over time it has grown quite large thanks to its strong economy and diverse community fabric which includes Hispanics, Native Americans of Anglo descent, Asians and people from other parts of North America who have moved here over time including Europeans such as Italians and Irish who settled here during Gold Rush days when prospectors came to these areas looking for new discoveries
Payson, Arizona was founded in 1863 by John C. Payson and his wife Martha. It was a station on the Arizonan Central Railroad. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s, thanks to its location at the mouth of the Gila River. By 1880, Payson had over 1,000 residents. In 1892, Payson became a city and remained so until 1912 when it merged with neighboring Kingman to form Phoenix.
