The name "Payson" first appeared on official U.S. map literature in 1879 as "Peoria", after Peoria Township in Gila County, Illinois. In 1912, John Wesley Powell and his party explored the Colorado River valley between Phoenix and Flagstaff while exploring the route for the first time ever traveled by humans; they named their findings Canyon del Norte (the North Canyon) after Payson Township in Gila County, Ariz., which lay to their left on their journey upriver from that point eastward towards Prescott on the New Mexico border. In 1920–21 when Payson was one of a group of small towns consolidated into what is now known as Pinal Valley during its heyday as an agricultural center due to irrigation water brought overland by Route 66 from north of Tucson via Peoria and Phoenix), it had a population of about 350 residents who were farmers and ranchers with some 30 businesses including two dry goods stores operated by Wm. Hennessey & Brothers and two grocery stores operated by Fenton & Sons running along Front Street near present-day White Sands Boulevard SW.). Most people hereabouts still spoke English until around World War II when many American servicemen returning home became fluent speakers or adopted local vernaculars; remaining English-speaking descendants are generally quite good at communicating with outsiders even today."
