In 1938 Payson had its own air force base which was closed down in 1945 and now used as an agricultural training center by New Mexico State University-Albuquerque. According to Forbes Magazine's list of America's 100 most prosperous towns in 2006, Payson has been named one of "the safest places to live." In 2013–14 it ranked number 1 for best job growth in Arizona among all incorporated municipalities with over 2,000 residents according to recent job reports from Arizonarepublica.

Davenport Chalfant bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land near present-day Payson for $5,000 cash and donated it to the city of Phoenix as part of the city's founders' grant program In 1912, Chalfant donated another 640 acres (248 ha) to Payson for $10,000 more This land included what is now downtown Payson and much of present-day Apache County
Payson is a small town in the Apache Nation located in Cochise County, Arizona. The first European to live in Payson was José Antonio Navarro who arrived in 1847. The community was founded by settlers from Tucson who found land for farming and grazing on the east side of the Little Colorado River. In 1875, Payson became a part of the new Tonto National Forest.
