Payson, Arizona is a small city located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Payson is named after Payson, Arizona which was founded in 1912 by J.J. Irvine and others as a bedroom community for eastern Arizonans who were moving westward to escape the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The name "Payson" comes from "Peñón", a Spanish word meaning peak or summit. The first post office in Payson opened on October 15, 1912. In 1921, Payson became an incorporated town with a population of 556 people. A year later, it had grown to 1,072 residents and in 1928 it reached 3,000 residents under the leadership of Mayor Harry Latham and Postmaster General John Harnischauer. By 1930 however, the effects of World War II had started to take their toll on Payson's economy and by 1941 its population had fallen to 697 people when hostilities ended that year with Japan's entry into World War II. The post office closed on December 30th of that year due to lack of mail volume but reopened on January 5th of 1942 under new management led by Postmaster General George Dorgan with a population of 1,049 residents including 299 military personnel stationed at Fort Bliss near Tucson which made Payson one of the most heavily bombed areas during World War II outside Hiroshima and Nagasaki . After six months as an open-air military airbase target town fullof high explosives cratering everything within 100 feet (30 m) around every building until all buildings had been destroyed or heavily damaged beyond repair), Fort Bliss turned over operations to civilian control on August 16th 1945 following Japan's surrender . With postwar reconstruction having taken center stage in Phoenix – both federally and statewide – local businessman Arturo Sosa became one key player involved in helping revivePhoenix's downtown core as well as developing several neighborhoods including Midtown Mesa/Pablo Valley/Wichita Hills etc., making him one important force behind Phoenix's civic revival movements during what is now known as its " Golden Age ". However it would be another two decades before another downtown renaissance could truly take hold with various large-scale developments occurring consecutively starting with nearby Scottsdale's dramatic growth during this time period culminating finally in today’s Peduto District which includes much older historic district such as Chandler Heights etc., giving us our current look and feel while still enjoying some very recent historical attractions like Pioneer Cemetery & Museum just blocks away from our courthouse Square!
