It gradually lost its importance as a mining center but regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for locals who worked in nearby Phoenix or Tucson. Today Payson is home to a few businesses and the Mohave County Courthouse which functions as the local government center. A variety of events are held throughout the year including rodeo weekends, arts festivals and traditional powwows.

Payson, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. It was established in 1886 as a post office and census-designated place. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The community of Payson developed on the site of present-day Payson after the Mexican–American War. Five men from Poston traveled to Tucson on September 15, 1885 to nominate Elisha S. Church for appointment as territorial governor; but he declined with the understanding that he would be replaced by George Fenton Cope upon his election to that office. In 1886, four men from Poston traveled again to Tucson and nominated Wm. Hodge for appointment as Territorial Marshal; but he also refused with the understanding that he would be replaced by John A. Macdonald when his term expired in 1888. In 1889, one man from Poston journeyed to Tucson and nominated Gossett Custer for appointment as Territorial Sheriff; but he also refused with the understanding that he would be replaced by John Joice when his term expired in 1890. On January 25, 1892, President Benjamin Harrison appointed James Mudge as Territorial Judge Advocate General with authority over all military courts martial within the Territory of Arizona; Mudge later resigned effective February 17th due to health reasons after only eight months service.. On October 1st 1892 voters approved an act creating Payson city government and electing Robert Denny mayor.. On November 3rd 1892 citizens approved a resolution providing for annexation of portions of Apache County into Payson city limits.. The first mayor of Payson was Robert Denny who served from November 3rd through December 15th 1892.. In 1893 following passage of Arizona State Constitution which regulated residency requirements within individual counties vote by referendum resulted in county seat being granted (now Phoenix) to Payson City Councilmember Warren Treadgold instead of voting directly against him on account of lack thereof residency interests within said county
In 1885, Payson was founded by John Wesley Powell and others as a post office on the Arizonan Railroad. The town was named after General George Washington Pemberton, commander of the expedition that discovered the Grand Canyon in 1876. In 1912, Payson became part of the newly created Navajo Nation.
