Payson is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and it is located on the banks of the Gila River. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is bordered to the north by Tempe, to the east by Chandler, to the south by Mesa, and to the west by Scottsdale. The name Payson comes from Rancho de las Animas which was granted in 1869 to Manuel Gonzales Payson. The community began as a railroad stop on Southern Arizona Railroad Company tracks that ran between Phoenix and Tucson. The first settlers were Mexican citizens who crossed over into what is now Payson during their journey home from farming or ranching operations in northern Mexico. The growth of Payson was due largely to two factors: First, because of its location on riverbanks where water could be drawn for irrigation purposes; second, because of its access to education and other resources that allowed for significant economic development. Today, many businesses operate within walking distance of all residents while still providing quality amenities such as shopping centers and public libraries.

The first post office was established in 1870, and as commerce grew in Payson, settlers erected businesses along Fourth Street. By 1890, Payson had a population of 350 residents. In 1902, Oilmen George Gibbs and J.D. Sprague discoveries nearby led to rapid growth for the community with new housing developments being built on Mountain Creek Road and First Avenue. The community's commercial strip became one of its attractions with numerous stores and restaurants lining Eighth Street between Ninth and Tenth Streets during this time period. In 1950, Payson voters approved incorporation as a town under Arizona law No. 97-2; however it did not happen until 1956 due to an effort by then Congressman Don Yarborough Sr., who championed development within the boundaries of present day Payson. The first store opened in 1957 Downtown; many other businesses followed suit over ensuing years including printing presses (the first in America), grocery stores (the early pioneers were baking bread at their homes), taverns (later becoming known as watering holes) and finally professional offices such as law enforcement agencies or education institutions until recently when most business activity has shifted online or away from downtown due to limited land availability near Interstate 10 freeway access
Payson was founded in 1853 by pioneers of the Mormon Battalion, who journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois. The town was named for George Payson, an early settler and member of the LDS Church. In 1881, Payson became a city.
