Payson, Arizona is a small town in the state of Arizona. It is located in Apache County, about 30 miles northeast of Phoenix. The population was 2,906 at the 2000 census. Payson has been inhabited by Anasazi people for thousands of years and their descendants still live there today. The first Europeans to visit Payson were Mexican traders in 1846. They named it San Pedro de Macoris after one of their number, Padres Francisco Mariano Vallejo and José Agustín de la Cruz. In 1863, John Wesley Powell explored these areas and named them after him, giving rise to the name Payson (Wesley's Park). He also built a log cabin here which he called "Norman." In 1874 Paiute Chief Joseph Pipea led an expedition from Southeastern Arizona into this area which led to the discovery of silver deposits here. From 1880 until 1912 Payson was part of the Navajo Nation under tribal government control. Afterward it became part of the United States as a result of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. The town got its start when Jens Mogens Rasmussen started trading goods with Cochise Indians in 1887. He bought some land here and founded Rasmussen Land & Ranch Company which grew into one of America's largest sheep ranchers over the next several decades. In 1935 Rasmussen donated his land for development into what is now Payson Village Center; Today it is home to many local businesses and cultural organizations including two museums: One devoted exclusively to Native American art and history, The Heard Museum; while another focuses on outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, hiking and skiing; As well as more than 20 restaurants/cafes/bars/libraries open during regular business hours
