In 1892, the first commercial Ammunition Plant was opened in Payson by W.H. Smith & Sons. This plant produced black powder for use in firearms. The plant closed in the early 1920s but its legacy still exists today as a nostalgic reminder of past times. Today, Shooting Sports Centers operates the first Ammunition Plant Museum in Payson which specializes in ammunition history and artifacts from around the region.

Payson was founded in 1867 by George Payson and his wife, Lucy. The first post office was established in Payson in 1870. In 1902, the town of Payson merged with the larger city of Phoenix to form a new metropolitan area.
