It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is located on the Mohave River in central Payson. The first permanent settler in what is now Payson was J.C. Nichols, who arrived in 1886 and established a ranch measuring 9 acres (3 ha). Nichols and his wife Hilda founded a Methodist church here in 1892, which remains Payson's only religious building to this day. In 1901, Waddell Sargent homesteaded land west of Nichols' ranch and began to build himself a log cabin known as "The White House". He would later rename it "The Republic". In 1912, John Wesley Dobson moved into The White House and started teaching school there; he would remain its headmaster until his death in 1948. In 1916, Gertrude Dodge bought some of Dobson's land east of The White House for $1,000; she built an addition to it that became her home until her death in 1984. In 1928-29, Payson voters passed an ordinance making it a prohibition district; this helped spur development within the community with bars and restaurants opening up soon after. During World War II (1941-1945), many citizens served their country through military duty or volunteered; some notable residents include Harry Truman (Ulysses S., 33rd president of the United States) and Floyd Babbitt (founder of Google). After the war ended, many veterans returned to their homes while others took jobs outside town; however, by 1970 only 2%of Payson's population remained veteran-owned businesses active today according to figures from Mesa County statistics bureau . It wasn't until 1982 that CD&T Broadcasting Corporation opened its first radio station here - KPHO - giving rise to new businesses such as convenience stores and fast food restaurants quickly followed throughout most of this decade while much older businesses closed or became abandoned over time due largely to economic factors including downtown redevelopment schemes spearheaded by then Mayor James Acheson which aimed suburban sprawl across Apache Junction Rd.; although some have managed to reopen given enough investment over time thanks initiatives like efforts made by current Mayor Donny Rayburn amongst others
