The valley was named after a locale in Paradise, California, where gold was found in the 1800s. At its peak, the population of paradise valley was over 100,000 people. This new discovery led to increased exploration and settlement throughout central and southern Arizona as individuals looked for new sources of wealth and resources that could be used to create new settlements and businesses outside of ranching communities such as Prescott and Tucson. By 1860, there were already over 30 companies operating in or near central Phoenix with mines dotting all corners of what is now downtown Phoenix including east Mesa Avenue between Second Street and Third Street; northeast Seventh Street between McDowell Road (now Shea Boulevard) and Vine Street; Pioneer Court on Wright Road south of Union street; Gold Rush alley on Fourth Street between First Avenue southbound and Olympic Drive northbound; Asphodel Alley on First Avenue northbound just west of Apache Boulevard; Diamond Alley east off I-10 just past Jerome Road north side into Tempe city limits; Desert Inn Hotel & Casino southeast corner Oracle Parkway/ Camelback Loop AZ border
The area that is now Paradise Valley was once part of the Tucson area. The first European to visit what is now Paradise Valley was Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avila in 1565. He named the valley after his 16th century home, paradise on earth. The area was also known as Yuma country and as the Desert of the Moon because of how little water there was in it. In 1866, gold was discovered in this area and soon a town began to form around it. The name for the town changed over time but always referred to as Paradise Valley. When World War II started, parts of Arizona were put into military service and so many people from Paradise Valley moved into those areas, making it one of the most heavily populated regions in Arizona.
