Oro Valley, Arizona is a small town located in Mohave County, Arizona. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Oro Valley is one of the oldest settlements in Mohave County and was first established in 1867. The land that now makes up Oro Valley was part of the Apache Nation and was given to Arapaho chief Manuel Doggett by territorial Governor John C. Fremont for his assistance with campaigns against the Navajo people. In 1875, General James H. White agreed to help white settlers purchase land in what is now Mohave County from the Apaches, and on October 20 of that year, White granted a deed to Doggett which included 640 acres ofwhat would become Oro Valley. What followed were years of construction as residents began building churches and schools; providing health care for the community; ranchers began raising cattle and sheep; and farmers started growing crops such as corn, beans, tomatoes, watermelons, potatoes and wheat. By 1893, there were six stores operating in Oro Valley with a population of 1,500 people. By 1907 there were ten businesses with a population of over 10,000 people living within walking distance of each other in downtown Oro Valley! In 1912 an earthquake occurred which destroyed most buildings within town including churches (including Sts Peter & Paul), schools (including Mrs Ladd’s School), homes (including several hundred) and barns/lodges along with any livestock or equipment not essential for agriculture or ranching being lost forever! Today only two buildings still remain standing from those days: The First Methodist Church built in 1915 on Main Street north of Highway 95A (now called River Drive) while also serving as City Hall until it moved to its current location south of Highway 95A in 1978;and old Post Office Building #1 also known as “The Woolen Mill” built between 1909-1912 on East Second Street east of today’s SR-201 intersection). The early years following World War I saw some growth for Oro Valley but stopped when hostilities ended in 1918; however growth resumed soon after when new highways opened up into central Arizona paving the way for more commerce and development throughout Mohave County. During this time period many young men from across Northern Mexico settled down around Oro Valley during their weekend visits home to work on farms or ranching operations before returning home to continue their journey westward towards California during Mexicali Weekend Festivalivals which took place every August since 1921! This early stage economic development helped spur further infrastructure projects such as the construction of both local dams along US-60 northwest of town late 1920s through 1930s culminating with damming Oflee Creek creating Lake Havasu National Park back east near present day Cottonwood Road NE; these projects are still visible today just south off Interstate 805 off state Route 16B(I-805 Business Loop)). It wasn't until WWII did things really take off for Oro Valley residents as they became involved with war effort helping build military barracks along Withy Oasis northeast cornerof town becoming renamed Fort Huachuca by 1944 due to increased activity at nearby Yuma Army Air Field! After 1945 things slowed back down again until 1951 when school enrollment reached its all time high thanks largely to Operation Plowshare which brought many Mexican American families fleeing violence & poverty back into our townships & villages nationwide thruOperation Cuellar resulting numerous store closures (& job losses)Consequently major redevelopment efforts ensued immediately ensuing including establishment ol ohchicola High School 1948 abruptly closing 3 years later consequent relocating students n McCloy Rd Jail next doorOak Hills Shopping Center opening 1969 resultant drivingEO business&M motel open same year Oak Hills Hospital opened 1979 adding much needed healthcare servicesTo date no one has returnedto Olalla since incorporation chartered 2 years earlier!!!
