Oro Valley is a small town in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Navajo Nation. Oro Valley is one of two communities in Cochise County that are post-office ZIP codes 82012 and 82013. The other community is Payson. The history of self-defense weapons in Oro Valley dates back to 1892 when Captain A.J. Weiser organized a posse to protect settlers from Apache Indians in what is now Cochise County. Captain Weiser's force was composed of six men: John Wagoner (brother of Mormon prophet Joseph Wagoner), Jesse Laughlin, George Henschel, Solomon Northup (father of modern day Payson), David Hughes and William Tappan ( brother-in-law to Abraham Lincoln). In 1896 Captain Weiser's group paid $5 for each man and wagon to purchase four shotguns and three pistols from Fenton & Co., makers of firearms then being known as "the best shotguns on earth." In 1902 Captain Weiser formed another posse which he christened the "Oro Valley Protective Association," with himself as its first president. That same year Sheriff Harry Mantle organized a posse to deal with Apaches near present day Payson after they had killed two settler children during a game of Possum Hunt outside Ofhouse Park northeast of Oro Valley. In 1907 Captains Elisha Goode and Chas Sibley organized an arriere party including men from both sides of the territorial dispute between Mexico and Arizona over land that forms today's south central Arizona were seeking refuge from Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; these groups were eventually joined by others looking for safety after their goals had been achieved or thwarted by Mexican forces pursuing them across the deserts of Central America into what became New Mexico Territory following Mexican independence in 1912.) 2) Between 1893 - 1916 there were many shootings/fights within this area surrounding Payson involving settlers/Apaches & Mexicans that led some people (& Gov't)to start arming themselves with whatever they could find(guns etc)... Gun confiscations also started happening here pretty regularly too back then... There have been several different types/versions/models handgunsleeve pistols used throughout most or all variations since 1892 whenCaptain AJWeiser organized his posse to protect settlers against Apache Indians...
