Oro Valley, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. He named it Isleta de las Flores because he found flowers there while hunting in that area. The U.S.-Mexican War (1846-48) resulted in Mexico ceding most of New Mexico to the United States, including Oro Valley and surrounding areas which became part of Arizona Territory during the war's aftermath. In 1880, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Oroville while exploring for pioneers working the White Mountains locales southeast of Tucson. By 1881, many miners had followed Powell's trail to find new sources of gold and silver as they prospected southwestward from Tucson into Pima County and eastward into Maricopa County; by 1888 all but two mines had been abandoned due to overproduction by Mexicans working without licenses or permits who were not subject to United States law governing mining operations within their own lands (the exceptions being Socorro Creek Mine #2NW located less than one mile from downtown Oro Valley).miners continued prospecting until 1902 when government regulations made mining towns necessary following discoveries at nearby Tombstone Mountain about 50 miles northwest where substantial amounts of silver had been found as well as significant quantities of gold (Tombstone mine production ceased completely in 1903). Today's economy revolves around healthcare services being provided by Mayo Clinic and Glendale Community Health Services; education through Mesa Verde College; government services through county government; tourism based on nearby attractions like Hoover Dam National Recreation Area or Mount Havasu National Park; and manufacturing operations associated with aluminum production or golf clubs made in Chino Hills just outside of town limits
