The firstguns were designed for hunting animals such as game animals or elephants. These early handguns were crudely made and had no protection against gunfire. The first pistols were designed for close quarters combat with other individuals or groups of people, and they were much more dangerous than today’s handguns because they could be fired quickly and without losing control. Pistol design changed over time, however, and eventually became less dangerous as shooters began to learn how to use them effectively in order to protect themselves from other individuals or groups of people (Fowler 1989). Gun violence increased in the United States during the late 1800s due to several factors including a lack of gun safety reforms at the state level, legislation supporting slavery which led to increasing numbers of black Americans being convicted of owning guns, international tensions which led to armed conflicts between countries, social unrest caused by changes in diets which lead to more shootings (Gonzalez 2017a). In addition to these national trends there was also an increase in gun suicides among American adults from 1899 through 1912 (Gonzalez 2017b). These trends suggest that there was a trend towards increased firearm usage within households rather than simply ownership among criminals or unstable individuals who were not safe using firearms safely (Fowler 1989; Gonzalez 2017c). However, despite this increase in firearm usage there was still no widespread system in place preventing people from shooting others with these devices(Fowler 1989; Gonzalez 2017d). In 1892 two men named George Hennepin shot five people dead at a theater across town from Minneapolis after receiving word that their tickets had sold out (Kramer 1990). This event served as one of the earliest examples of mass shootings where multiple people died due primarily to gunshots fired by two perpetrators(Dixon 2009; Fenton 1984). It is interesting to note that although this particular shooting occurred prioritizes handgun use for crime prevention over actual rifle use it illustrates how easily pistols can be converted into deadly weapons if used improperly(Dixon 2009; Fenton 1984). Shortly thereafter another massacre took place when John Hinckley Jr., acting under orders from then President George H W Bush shot three members off stage at the Washington National Cathedral before killing himself(Peters 2016) . This event symbolized how dangerous it is for anyone carrying any sort of weapon outside their home openly even if they do not intend on using it(Peters 2016).
