The Oro Valley community of Oro Valley was founded in 1881 by two brothers, W.J. and A.M. Oro, after they discovered a silver mine in the nearby mountains. The community grew rapidly, and by 1899 there were over 150 residents. By 1913 the population had reached 350 people, and by 1920 it had grown to 1,000 people; the town prospered thanks to its mining industry and agricultural holdings. However, World War II led to a decline in the local economy, as American forces began occupying southern Arizona to fight against Japan. In 1945 the town was burned down by Japanese forces during their occupation of southern Arizona; however, despite this tragedy the town has continued to thrive as an agricultural center today. Oro Valley is located at 8°54′N 111°14′W; it is bordered on the north by Pinal County and on the east by Mohave County. As of 2000 census data, the population of Oro Valley was 1,876 people (an increase of 122 from 1990). The average household size is 3-4 people and the median age is 39 years old; children under eighteen are not counted in this estimate. Hispanic or Latino residents make up about 25% of Oro Valley’s population (compared to 10% for all non-Hispanic whites). Oro Valley’s history can be traced back to 1881 when two brothers named Wojakowski discovered asilver mine within sight of their settlement known as “The Generals Store” which would soon become known as “Oro valleys Mines Ltd., Ltd.,” because it purchased shares in that company from other investors early on in its development process! The mines operated until 1911 when management passed out into private hands due largely to low payable silver prices caused by restricted access to raw ore! For many years following that point life centered around farming with some light manufacturing activity taking place here & there but overall things went more slowly than they could have ever imagined! Despite this downturn though life still managed plenty of milestones such as being granted city status because they had outgrown their isolated rural setting (& later becoming one of Tucson’s most thriving downtown areas), numerous births & marriages including those between rich & poor alike (until WWII when social class distinctions became increasingly blurred), hosting several large international conferences hereabouts (& an especially memorable stint right before WW2 known locally simply as “WWII Ozvielle Weekend”), accumulating quite a bit of street debris along with assorted personal items just waiting for someone willing (& able)to sort through them all – until everything changed on October 16th 1998 when then Mayor Bob Cook decided he wanted his community back!!! With little warning or explanation given other than promises that services like zoning changes/updates/maintenance etc would no longer be required after certain arbitrary dates he took office proclaiming himself mayorNORMAL instead…..and suddenly…everything changed again!!!!! Only this time without any warning whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It wasn’t long before City Manager Don Kline recognized that Mayor Cook really did not understand what he meant WHEN HE SAYS HE WANTED HIS COMMUNITY BACK TO NORMAL….SO THE CITY MANAGEMENT BEGAN WORKING ON A PLAN TO REPEAL ALL OF THE ZONING CHANGES THAT MEMBER BOY COOK BROUGHT ABOUT IN 1998 WHEN HE Took Office…..AND IT HAS BEEN GOING VERY WELL EVER SINCE THEN!!!!! Notwithstanding some initial setbacks (mainly due primarily to Countrywide Energy obstructing proper work on infrastructure needed for electric power delivery) progress has been made towards restoring order while ensuring everyone always feels welcome here……..& if you don't believe us just ask anyone who's ever walked thru our door how their day went 🙂
The Oro Valley region in central Arizona is known for its descendants of the Pima and Apache Indians. The area was first populated by the Hopi people, who lived there until they were forced out in 1868 by a U.S. military campaign. The next year, the US federal government established the Mohave County seat of Flagstaff, which included parts of present-day Oro Valley.
