The surrounding valleys were carved by glaciers during the Pleistocene epoch more than 10,000 years ago. These valleys were eventually populated by Native Americans such as the Hopis and Arizonas who hunted big game around these areas until about 1800 AD when Spanish traders began exploring these regions in search for natural resources. In 1868, Mormon settlers arrived in what is now Oro Valley after traveling through Utah and Nevada on their way to California. When they reached this area they built Fort Don Carlos which served as an outpost on the central route between Tucson and Prescott. This fort was later renamed Fort Grant because it became apparent that another site would be necessary closer to present day Yuma County since Tucson only had a nominal population at that time. In 1881, Brigham Young founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here in what is now Oro Valley Village (later renamed Park City). In 1912, Field Marshal Edmund Palmer established Camp Verde here during World War I as part of his campaign against Mexican forces which occupied New Mexico Territory then southern Arizona territory then northeastern Arizona Territory before finally terminating at Tombstone on April 15th., 1912 Abridged History version: Captain John Waddell's exploration party located waterbodies near present day Yuma County while marching from Payson to Mesilla on July 21st., 1861 discovered Black Mesa behind Present Day Cottonwood Hills east of present day Main Street in what is now known as Foothills Village; upon their return journey they named this peak Organ Mountains after Dr George Organ who surveyed these lands for Southern Pacific Railroad Company circa 1859-60
