Nogales is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It is located about 25 miles northeast of the city of Phoenix and about 20 miles southeast of Tucson. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Nogales originally was named Navarro Wells after Captain Manuel de Navarro who explored the area in 1853. The first permanent residents in what is now Nogales were Mexican settlers from central Mexico who arrived during the Mariscan Revolt of 1847-48. They were joined by American passengers on a ship called the "Cimarron" that sailed from Acapulco on July 12, 1852 to explore the region around Tucson and Gila River (now known as central Arizona). In 1863 Colonel James Wickersham erected a post office at Navarro Wells and named it after himself. By 1870 there were 9 white men living in Nogales and 7 Mexicans working for Wickersham. In 1881 Navajo Indians killed five whites outside town limits when they captured one wagonload of supplies being shipped by wagon train led by John Wesley Powell through the area. The United States government responded with an Indian Wars campaign against Apache Indians which lasted until 1865. In 1887 Mexican immigrants founded El Paso attempting to create a new commercial center between Phoenix and Durango, Colorado; however, this failed because transportation problems made it difficult to move goods long distances over rugged terrain. The first store opened in El Paso on October 17, 1889 by José Gomez y Valdez under license from New Mexico Territory governor Isidore Mackenzie Hinchey%. On February 14, 1912 Pershing organized an expedition headed by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock to cross Chihuahua Desert into Arizona Territory through Nogales but only reached Apple Valley before turning back due to lack of food and water supplies along their route; however local press reports credit Hancock's forces with halting Apache raids near Gila River south of present-day Chinle National Monument while troops restocked at Nogale for future operations. On March 15th US Cavalry Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer traveled 3 days across open desert northwest of today’s Weaverville without incident or sighting any hostile Indians until he discovered Native Americans camped within 10 miles from his location east side old Ute Mountain range March 16th around sunset while scouting reconnaissance missions ahead his next day march he attacked headlong without warning suddenly running out into open country Surprise!
