Nogales, Arizona was founded in 1912 as a small post office called Nogales. It grew rapidly and by 1916 it had become the largest town in the region. The name Nogales is Spanish for "horse trough" and this is likely why the town became known for its horse operation. The first store in Nogales opened in 1914 and the first school was built in 1915. By 1922, Nogales had reached its peak as a commercial center with businesses such as banks, hotels, and stores lining Main Street. But during the 1920s, drought hit the area hard and by 1930, most of Nogales were abandoned. In 1935, a group of local businessmen resurrected Nogales as an agricultural community with a new courthouse, restaurant, and grocery store. In 1939-1940 construction began on what would be America's first airfield - Yuma Air Force Base - which would become one of the most important military hubs in Arizona during World War II. However due to World War II intervened politics changes at home caused Yuma AFB to be closed down after just two years of operations while other major military bases were established around Phoenix and Tucson. As part of efforts to modernize Arizona government infrastructure Robert Jaffe led Congress to approve $11 million for development at Yuma AFB which included plans for housing, retail space (including a movie theater), health care facilities, offices and other related amenities that would later form what is now known as Terminal 3 at Yuma Airport
The first European to explore Nogales was Juan de la Cruz, who reported seeing a route from the Puente del Norte through what is now Nogales on his journey from Mexico City to Arizonas capital of Tucson in 1540. The fort at today's Nogales was built by Don Bernardino de Ocampo in 1764 as part of the Mexican garrison that defended the Arizona frontier against Apache and Comanche raids. In 1847, Governor Manuel Micheltorena established the town of Tucson as a fortified trading post on the edge of what is now Phoenix. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location, and by 1850 it boasted a population of 10,000 people. However, during the Gold Rush era (1859-1865), mining operations shifted away from Nogales and other parts of central Arizona because gold was rather difficult to find in these areas. By 1865, only about 500 people remained in Tucson; however, this number increased significantly during Reconstruction (1868-1920) when Tucson became an important center for West Side politics and culture. During World War II (1939-1945), Tucson played an important role as a munitions plant; however, most of its importance ended with the war’s end. Today, Tucson has become one of the largest city centers inArizona; it also has strong ties with Hispanic cultures thanks to its sizable Mexican population and various cultural events held throughout the year.
