Nogales, Arizona is a census-designated place in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1901 by Ira Nogales and named after his father, Nogaal. In 1905, it became an incorporated city with a population of 511. The downtown core of Nogales was destroyed by fire in 1916 but rebuilt with new architecture and businesses. In 1940, during World War II, the U.S Army built Camp Bowie nearby to house troops engaged in combat against the Japan Imperial Army on Southern Luzon Island. Camp Bowie served as an internment camp for Native Americans until its closure in 1945. As part of February 26 Agreement (1946), Navajo citizens were allotted land near Tucson and moved there from what is now Nogales Township and Indian School District No 1 east of Interstate 805; therefore most residents today reside within the confines of Pinal County's present boundaries which are located within a radius of just over 20 miles (30 km). The post office at Nogales opened on October 15th 1898 under Johnson Post Office Directory #1 which had been established November 17th 1865 by George Johnson at Marana Rancho Nowata east of Globe City (). The last letter mailed from Globe City () before it was abandoned on March 16th 1892 was "NOGALE". On that date it also received mail from Flagstaff thru Prescott arriving at Globe on March 17th 1892 (#8795) . At this time postal service between Glorietta Springs() & Globe () ceased due to lack of horses & wagons necessary for long distance transportation
