As part of efforts to expand federal infrastructure throughout Arizona during the postwar period, Nogales became one of several sites selected for development by newly appointed governor Manuel López de La Fuente in 1951-52 pursuant to plans that called for increased government spending amid mounting social unrest across America. A new courthouse was erected here in 1953; this structure still stands today and forms a centerpiece of downtown Nogales remembered fondly by many residents today as "the old courthouse." NOGALE AIR FORCE BASE INCIDENT: On July 16th 1944 at approximately 0600 hours local time two aircraft from 3d Fighter Wing were lost while on their mission over Japan when their engines failed due to fuel exhaustioniling caused by bad weather conditions; both pilots died Crash landed on dirt runway near present day Central Avenue & Gila River Parkway about 8 miles east of Tucson Airport after completing their mission having flown 920 Miles nonstop! This event has come to be known as "The Night Of The Lightnings" due to numerous lightening bolts seen near airport during that night following takeoff & landing! In 1957, construction began on what would become known as Fort Huachuca Army Post Park adjacent to current day University Boulevard just south of I-10 exit 204A - one year prior to its completion! It quickly became apparent thatHuachuca would serve not only military but also civilian users with programs such as education & recreation available through separate facilities nearby including Camp Verde State Park located 6 miles northeast on University Boulevard opposite Apache Junction Resort District
