After Mexican independence from Spain was proclaimed in 1821, Ute Indians began raiding missions and settlements along the New Mexico–Arizona border motivated by claims to territory including what are now Tucson and Nogales. In 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumner on Navajo Nation soil during 1863 Navajo Uprising, Lieutenant Colonel John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into battle against Native American warriors known as "Coyotes". Many Native Americans died or were captured as result of engagements fought at Nogales between Confederate troops led by Captain William Tecumseh Sherman and about 20 Apache tribal warriors commanded by Chief Joseph Mesa Onzalatuh who had previous experience dealing with white soldiers combined with his own band of 50 Cochise Indians numbering circa 350 men with horses estimated at 3200 total killed or captured between 1862-1865 Campaigns Against Imperial Mexicans) One hundred years after General George Armstrong Custer's fatal engagement with Navajo Tribal Warriors at what became known as Battle of Yuma National Monument northwest of Phoenix
