Nogales, Arizona was founded on December 14, 1912 by Nogales City Councilman Harry H. Alford and businessman John W. Walton as a citrus grove and cattle ranch. The city's first post office opened in 1914. The name of the city was changed to Nogale on February 3, 1916 due to the influence of the Native American tribe known as the Navajo. On November 5, 1917 a schoolhouse massacre occurred at Fort Sill when United States Cavalry troopers killed 22 Navajo students and teachers during an instructional session at the military fort. The massacre is also considered one of the deadliest events in United States frontier history. In 1924, Nogale became part of what is now Phoenix metropolitan area; it had been annexed by Phoenix since 1902. In 1936, during the Great Depression, Nogale lost its status as a town but regained it after World War II when Phoenix annexed it back into its metropolitan area; however, it remains unincorporated today. Nogale has experienced various economic changes over time: agriculture gave way to manufacturing during the 1920s; thenumber mills came along in the 1930s; while oil production began increasing in earnest in Mid-1930s and 1960s.

The population reached 10,000 residents by 1950 and 20,000 residents by 1970.

Today there are around 30 families living in Nogales.
