The first European to see what became Nogales was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 during his voyage from Acapulco to San Diego. He charted what would become present-day Nogales on September 14, 1542 as "El Paso de los Angeles". In 1847 Mexican War veteran Pedro Cabeza de Vaca discovered gold in this area and named it Nuño de Guadalupe for General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had convoyed him to that location during the war. The name "Nuño" may have been given because of an event which took place while he was here; one day while he was out prospecting for gold some locals ambushed and killed six men returning from a party exploring nearby hillsides. In 1912, Gertrude Atherton Grant founded Rancho La Venta (later Agua Fria) north of modern-day Nogales on land grant awarded her by then President Theodore Roosevelt as part of his amateur effort to promote sheep ranching in southern Arizona after seeing it offered by some boosters who wanted to invest money into providing water rights for those ranching operations. Grants began working the land in 1912 but only developed it slowly due to lack of irrigation facilities until 1928 when they built their first pumping station deep within the desert about northeast of today's downtown Nogale near where Interstate 10 meets US Route 66/Arizona State Route 191 (now I-10). This pump station produced enough water for all their needs including irrigating their crops which were principally cotton and wheat; however power went out shortly thereafter so they retired it in 1958 primarily using solar energy until 1978 when they constructed a new production plant using turbines powered by electricity exported from Los Angeles Superior Electric Generating District which currently supplies mostoration services integral to most major businesses within town limits along with essential fire protection services critical during summer wildfires now known as “The Great Mogadishu Fire” caused by brush fires started accidentally across state line several years ago resulting in $2 million damage done not just east side but also west side especially towards Sahagun Mountains before being contained
