Nogales, Arizona is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The city was founded by Hidalgo de Apache and his followers in 1847 as part of the campaigns to drive out Mexicans from the area. The name Nogales comes from New Mexico, where many of these pioneer Franciscans had come to establish their base. The first airguns were invented in Nogales by José María Peralta and Francisco González in 1892. This early type of gun used a small cartridge filled with powder and shot that was fired from an old-fashioned muzzleloader. Nogales experienced some significant events during World War II. On November 3, 1940, Japanese forces invaded southern Arizona and conquered portions of the county including Nogales. The town was bombed on December 7th by the Allies in an effort to destroy Japanese military installations. Afterward, many American soldiers moved into the town to help rebuild it after the war. In 1951, President Harry Truman designated Nogale as part of the Desert Research Center located at Camp Cooke in Tucson because of its significance as a key strategic location for Ulysses S. Grant's march on Tucson in 1867. In 1957, Congress passed the Immigration Reform Act which increased immigration levels in Arizona from 3 percent per year to 11 percent per year; this increase caused much social upheaval throughout Phoenix because many Hispanics wanted to enter without having their applications vetted by English speakers living nearby who controlled access to jobs and education opportunities. As a result of these changes, most Mexican Americans left downtown Phoenix for suburban areas such as Chandler or Scottsdale during 1980s when service Industry boomed due to NAFTA brought about increasing competition from Latin American countries for workers within North America’s two largest economies (Canada & Mexico). According to 2000 census report there are now less than 1% Mexican Americans living within city limits while more than 60% identify themselves as Anglo Europeans or Latinos overall making them one of America’s most visible minority groups today
The Nogales area was first settled by the Hopi in the early 1800s. The area became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War in 1848. The United States acquired land in Arizona from Mexico following the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. In 1912, Nogales was made a city and then, in 1924, it became a county seat.
