Mesa, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 21,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pinal County. The history of Mesa began with pioneers who arrived in 1856 and founded what is now Mesa on the Gila River. The city was named for Lieutenant Colonel John S. Mesa (1820 – 1893). In 1881, when Phoenix was founded and its predecessor towns were consolidated into one municipality, Mesa became part of that municipality. Mesa's first store opened in 1861 on Congress Street near present-day Indian School Road. A post office was established at Mesa in 1865, and it continued to serve until 1912 when it moved to Tuscon. The first school in Mesa was built in 1868 by Mrs. Fannie Cowlingson and Drs Charles Hays and Benjamin Weller Jr.. Mrs. Cowlingson served as principal until her death in 1870; Wells served as teacher from 1870 until his retirement in 1907.
