On February 14, 1853, Mormon settlers arrived in what is now Mesa Township and established Avante House near present-day Cottonwood Avenue and Camelback Road. The first post office opened in 1854; it was moved to its current location three miles east in 1861 after Tucson became a independent country under Republic of Mexico rule. In 1881 the Boston & Tucson Railway built along what is now I-10 from Tucson to Prescott; this route provided access to irrigate adjacent farmland for cotton production south of Phoenix. Business owners located along I-10 included J M Salinger who operated his restaurant across from US 85/US 101/SR 175 until his death in 1978, Harry Chandler who ran one of Phoenix's largest tiendas de comida loca (laboratory restaurants) until he closed shop around 1990, George W Bush Sr.'s father who started several businesses including Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Tempe substation north of I- 10 on First Street until his death in 2004, Ed Armbruster cofounded Fiesta Bowl Inc., which became one of America's largest college bowl franchises when he bought University Of Oklahoma football tickets during the 2006 Fiesta Bowl game played at University Park Stadium adjacent to Southern Arizona State University campus
The Mesa Massacre was a tragedy that occurred on September 16, 1912, in Mesa, Arizona. A group of young men, led by Pancho Villa, attacked and killed six people including two policemen. Three of the gunmen were shot and killed before they could shoot any more people. The other three gunmen committed suicide after murdering their victims.
