Mesa (pronounced "mes-a") is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 26,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Mesa's history begins with Spanish colonists who arrived in 1769 and named it San José de los Arroyos de Mesa y Vallejo after the hill that now stands on which Mesa rises. In 1857, General Mariano Escobar purchased two lots in what is now Mesa from Captain James Watt for $1,000USD. He declared it a town and named it after his old home country of Spain – Santa Fe de las Vegas de Escobar. After Mexican independence was gained in 1847, many American settlers arrived in central Arizona and began to rename towns as they became more familiar with their surroundings. They adopted the name of their old homes – Mesa or San José – but did not establish another municipal government until 1859 when Territorial Governor Manuel Tsur issued an ordinance creating a single town government with power to levy taxes and borrow money for public works including roads and schools. Shortly thereafter, construction began on what would become Mesa's first courthouse cornerstonestone: The cornerstone for the current courthouse was actually laid by forces under General Mariano Escobar on October 15th 1865 during his Raid on Tucson; this event is commemorated by a plaque located outside of that building housing some of its original exhibits. In 1912, developer Harry Chandler bought 1/3 interest in Valley Girdwood Company from Waddell Layton & Company which had developed Valley Girdwood into one of Arizona's leading citrus groves; he renamed it Mesquite City Corporation properties before selling most of those holdings to local farmers during World War I for use as munitions production sites; however several Mesquite City Corporation parcels were later sold back to developers during other periods throughout the 1920s-1930s). After World War II ended there was little demand for citrus fruits so much as cattle feedstock so mesquite was abandoned until 1951 whenzoners started moving into new neighborhoods such as Green Hills Rancho Mirage eastward from downtown Phoenix . The first tornado touched down near downtown Phoenix on April 14th 1954 killing five people including three schoolteachers while damaging dozens thousand homes; reconstruction started immediately except that electric lines had been destroyed making power unavailable to much of downtown Phoenix so businesses closed windowsills along Main Street between Constitution Avenue north and south while mobs burned any stores not rebuilt within 72 hours! Since then mesquite has seen numerous redevelopment efforts including being used as a filming location for TV shows like "Cheers" (1982) and "The Office" (2007) among others while still remaining an important agricultural center producing hay, wheat, soybeans and apples
