Mesa, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pima County. Mesa is located on the eastern edge of Phoenix metropolitan area and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Mesa has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mesa were Franciscan missionaries who came through central Arizona in 1769-1770. Father Junípero Serra founded a mission near present-day Mesa in 1792 and named it after Saint Benedict of Nursia, who had died in 1247 A.D.. In 1868, when Tucson was established as a town and Pima County was created from parts of Apache Territory, Mesa became part of Tucson City limits. However, it continued to be an independent village until 1912 when it merged with Tucson to become the consolidated city of Mesa/Tucson. The new city began to grow rapidly due to its location on railroad tracks that linked downtown Phoenix with agricultural areas northwest and west of town. Railroads brought people and goods into town and also stimulated industry which led to increased employment opportunities for residents and growth in both housing construction and business activity throughout much of Mesquite Valley east of downtown Phoenix; this region would eventually become known as Old Town Mesa or simply Valley Heights. In 1916–1917 two major fires destroyed more thanhalfthebuildinginValleyHeights; nevertheless valley Heights continuedtoboom economically as severalnew industrial parks were developed there during World War II thanks largely to local war Contracts being awarded by then Defense Secretary Robert McNamara for development at what are now University Parkway (southwest corner) and Mayo Drive (northwest corner). Although most businesses closed during the Great Depression decade many reopened thanks to government stimulus programs such as New Deal money set aside specifically for small towns like Mesa which had failed during Prohibition era although some businesses did close because they could not compete with larger companies reopening after repeal including Sears Roebuck & Co., Mohawk Lumber Company etc.; however overall Valley Heights bounced back relatively well post-Depression thanks largely to continuing population growth rates (+10%) along with increasing job opportunities leading suburbanites moving into town while folk living outside valley heights started coming ashore primarily trying airmail service available from Glendale Airport Additionally Army base facilities opened up main Street between I-10 & Prescott Road creating even more employment opportunities giving riseto nickname “The Ghetto” after nearby Wright Air Force Base Another military base nearby opened up providing yet another impetus for growth motel developments sprang up all around old military base periphery formingPhoenixTakeoverTown

In 1905, the name of the town was changed to Mesa Village after a vote by residents to change their name because they felt it sounded more Anglo-Saxon than Apache or Navajo. At this time, much of central Phoenix lay within what was then MesaVillage boundaries. The area that now makes up Phoenix became part of Mexico City during World War II and many new Mexican immigrants moved into central Phoenix during that time frame; however, few people from Mesa came over and many memories about our hometown are still kept alive through annual events like Fiesta de Mayo and El Chaco Day Parade which take place in downtownPhoenix every year on May 3rd! In 1957 two small towns were merged together to form Mesa as well: Sierra Vista to its east and Anthem west of I-10 (now known as Scottsdale)
