Nichols built the first shotgun factory in Mesa and started manufacturing shotguns and pistols there. This factory produced many famous firearms such as the Winchester Model 1886, Remington 8-shot repeater, Colt Peacemaker, Smith & Wesson Model 686 and others. The popularity of target shooting continued into the 1920s when many people moved to Mesa from other parts of Arizona due to the booming oil industry. Target shooters soon found their favorite place to practice their skills – on eastside properties that had large expanses of hardpacked dirt for firing range use! In 1927, gunners from both World Wars gathered at Desert View Park to fire hundreds of rounds at dummy police officers placed around the park perimeter (the only time those targets ever came into contact with live human beings).
