During World War II, many citrus fruits were grown here for military rationing purposes due to California's lack of production for fruit after 1942′s Dust Bowl conditions had devastated much of the Western United States'. However, despite all efforts by local farmers to produce food for soldiers stationed here during wartime using whatever resources they could muster- including irrigation systems -the resulting shortage led to increased prices for goods sold at local stores as well as less production overall from Valley residents because their farms couldn't meet demand from outside sources like California or Japan which were now able to provide more affordable rations than ever before thanks largely to advances in agriculture technology seen since World War I. In 1948DOE approved construction plans for what would become known as "Mesa Air Force Base" after request by then Governor Phil Gramm who saw AFB potential use as an airfield hosting bombers used against Imperial Japanese forces invading America east of our border- something never realized until recently given current USAF holdings within Phoenix airspace). At that time there were only a few scattered Native American villages near what is now Mesa Village. In 1912 John T. White founded Mesa City as a result of his efforts to purchase land from local Apache Indians for development into an agricultural center adjacent to Prescott Valley where he then lived with his wife and two daughters. The new city became an important transportation hub for southeastern Arizona and played an important role in developing subsequent portions of Phoenix including Maricopa County and Pinal County. In 1957 Mesa was renamed after General Douglas MacArthur who served as Secretary of War under President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II

In 1881, a post office was established at Mesa and the town began to grow. In 1916, Mesa became a city and it has retained that status ever since.
