The first people to live in what is now Mesa were the Hohokam who built their village on top of a small hill in 1847. In 1912, when Phoenix was founded, Mesa became one of its original cities and it has remained that way since then. The History of Mesa begins with the Spanish Empire which took over much of what is now Mexico in 1542 AD. As Mexican territory expanded northward, they encountered Native Americans who had already established villages and towns throughout what is now central and southern Arizona Territory. The Indigenous peoples called these settlements Indian Wells because there was a well located near each community for drinking water. Eventually Spaniards began to explore these areas and discovered new resources including coal and uranium which led to the town being named after one such mineral resource: Mesa de Oro (Mesa of Gold). During World War II, Mesa played an important role as both an airfield and munitions plant. It also served as a training ground for American forces during the war. After hostilities ended, Mesa slowly transitioned into an agricultural center until the late 1960s when mining operations resumed due to increased demand for copper from mines in nearby Tucson AZ and other parts of Mexico. This led to added pollution which resulted in public concern over environmental degradation within the city limits starting in the 1980s onward. However, despite this public opposition, development continues unabated today with many high-rise apartment buildings dotting downtown Mesa skyline
