The area that today makes up Maricopa County was first part of Apache Territory, which was established in 1847. Apache warriors and their families were killed or forced to flee during the Mexican-American War. In 1863, Mexico ceded Arizona to America and renamed it Phoenix Municipal District. The city of Phoenix was founded in 1868 by landowner James Waddell. During the early days of Phoenix’s growth, much of what is now Maricopa County was within its boundaries. However, after Waddell sold his land to the railroad company in 1886, most of what is now Maricopa County became part of Mesa County. In 1912, when Arizona became a U.S. state, Maricopa County added two districts: one comprising parts east of Scottsdale and north of Prescott and another extending west from Tucson into central Arizona. In 1932, when Arizona seceded from America and formed its own country under a new government system called Republic Of Mexico (ROM), Maricopa Countys boundaries changed again – this time becoming nearly identical to those currently used by the country’s Mexican-born residents! Even though it has been home to various cultures over many centuries – including Arizonan Puebloan people who lived around junction sites along Interstate 10 until as recently as 1910; Spanish settlers who built missions here in 1769-1781; Navajo Indians who inhabited these same areas for centuries before moving out in 1868; American soldiers during World War II; Mormons who arrived here during the 1800s; and finally arriving Mexicans following President Obama’s executive order Baker locationing all illegal immigrants living in America south of 8th Street outside Phoenix – MaricopaCounty has always been an agricultural community with a strong farming heritage that continues today on parcels stretching from Tempe down through Surprise Valley into central Tucson and beyond into eastern New Mexico
On Maricopa, Arizona's Pima County there are a number of interesting and important milestones in its history. The first white settlers on the area arrived in 1847, when Captain George Goodwin and his party of pioneers landed on what is now the east side of Maricopa County. The land was donated by Pima Indian Chief Manuel de la Hoz, who also founded Phoenix in 1821. The town of Prescott was established in 1850 as a post office near present-day Scottsdale. It became an agricultural center with a railroads coming through the area and soon developed into a major city with over 50,000 residents by 1860. The population grew to more than 100,000 by 1890. In 1912, Prescott become the county seat and remained so until 1952 when it moved to Phoenix. In 1915, Apache Indians were killed during an operation to roundup cattle around the small town of Cochise Stronghold east of Phoenix. This event is generally considered to be the start of World War I and has been cited as one of the reasons for increased violence between Apache Indians and European settlers in that region. In 1916, John Fords airplane crashed into Coconino National Forest while bombing targets at Mogollon Pass; both Fords and four other passengers were killed including pilot Harry Nourse Jr., co-pilot Charles Lindbergh Jr., navigator Clifford Berryman (a passenger on board Flight 191),and pressurized engineer Edwin Bogan III (the only person alive from that plane). As a result of this tragedy many people lost their jobs due to aviation regulations set during World War I which had not yet been relaxed since then
