By 1892, a company had been established in Tucson to produce targets for the local shooting range. By 1914, there were ten guns companies in Maricopa County producing target material for use at shooting ranges across the county. After World War II, people stopped using gun targets because they became too dangerous. However, some people continued making them until the late 1960s when new firearms regulations took effect in Arizona that made it illegal to shoot at any object with an explosive device on it without getting a license from the sheriff’s office. This ban affected many businesses that produced gun targets such as C&R Guns & Ammunition in Tempe and TargetTix in Phoenix. After the ban ended, many businesses started producing target material again including TargetTix and Gun Targets Emporium in Phoenix along with numerous others throughout Arizona until today. Many individuals still enjoy making their own gun targets even though they are no longer allowed to do so within state borders.

Services such as healthcare and law enforcement are important to Maricopa County residents and businesses alike and provide much needed employment opportunities for locals. A number of cultural attractions make up part of the local landscape including Mesa Verde National Park which offers stunning views of Mount San Marcos; Scottsdale Municipal Airport which serves both general aviation and air cargo; Queen Creek Dam which provides irrigation for many farms around town; Pinnacle Peak National Monumentwhich contains an extinct volcano that is more than 3,000 feet high; Stone Canyon State Park which offers hiking trails through ancient cliff dwellings along the banks of an Arkansas River; Tempe Municipal Airport which hosts a wide variety of commercial flights throughout the year;and Arizona State University – Tempe campus where students can find research labs, classrooms, dining halls and various athletic facilities

The Maricopa County seat is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and it has been the site of government since 1853. The county was formed on November 3, 1852, from portions of the former Apache County. The county's current boundaries were set by an act of Congress on February 14, 1912. The traditional location for Maricopa County government had been at Scottsdale and Phoenix but this arrangement changed when Phoenix annexed nearby Talpey Mesa on February 15, 1916. In 1934 the Arizona Legislature created a second district including downtown Phoenix and annexing parts of Tempe and Mesa Verde Counties as well as part of Gilbert. In 1946 voters approved a proposition to create four new districts comprising most of centralPhoenix; these districts were named after Midwestern governors who served in that year: Harry S. Truman (D-Iowa), Frank Murphy (D-New York), Jerry Dillingham (R-Hawaii) and Dewey Earl Johnson (D-Arizona). On November 3, 1948, Navajo Nation Indian School District No. 1 vied with other school districts to gain control over Maricopa High School after the western wing burned down in a fire that destroyed much of downtown Phoenix on October 25th. A three day election campaign ensued in which voter turnout was high with nearly every ward voting out their entire board members save for one Lazarillo Elementary School trustee who abstained because she did not want her school within city limits
American Indians living in Maricopa County were the Yuma Apache and the Santa Cruz Apache. The first European to arrive in what is now Maricopa was José Francisco de Paula, a Spanish explorer who sailed into the Phoenix area in 1769. He named the area Arizona after his homeland, Arica, Peru. The first white man to set foot on this land was David Griffin in 1821 when he founded what is now Phoenix.
