The county Seat Museum is open every day except Monday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., closed on Tuesdays and Fridays due to renovation projects inside the building currently being occupied by Mesa Community College; Admission is free however parking may be available for $10 per hour during museum hours which are 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Mon-Fri
In 1847, the Arizona Territory was organized. One year later, in 1848, the first land grant was given to José Maricopa by Governor Manuel García. The grant included 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land on the east side of Phoenix. This area is now known as Mesa Verde National Park. In 1850, Captain John Hales and his group discovered gold near what is today downtown Phoenix. This discovery led to a stampede of people into the new Territory andename it "Phoenix." In 1863, Congress created a second territory called Felicity which extended from Scottsdale on the south side of Phoenix all the way to Tucson on the north side. The Mexican-American War started in February 1846 and ended months later when General Santa Anna surrendered at Chaparral Pass. As a result of this war, many Americans decided to move westward into what is now Arizona because they saw an opportunity for business opportunities and more access to resources than they had in California or New Mexico. Some among these settlers were José Maricopa who moved from Tucson to Apache Junction in 1851 and platted what became present-day Mesa Verde National Park on some of his land grants in 1860
