There is no doubt that the gunmag industry has had a long and varied history in Maricopa, Arizona. From the early days of firearms, when muzzleloaders and revolvermakers competed for customers in local saloons, to today’s A&P Gun Shop, there have been moments when Maricopa County was home to one of the most vibrant gun-buying scenes in the nation. The first guns purchased in Maricopa County were muzzleloading pistols and rifles bought by settlers living on the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills east of Phoenix. In 1868, rifle manufacturer John Brown & Sons erected a facility on First Street between Camelback Road and McDowell Road in what is now downtown Phoenix. The company became known as “Browning Arsenal” because founder John Brown (1809-72) had been born at nearby Green Valley Ranch. In 1892, Tucson entrepreneur George Custer bought 5 acres southeast of Apache Junction where he built what is now Custer Park. He named it after General Custer who died during World War I at an Army camp nearlathe, Wyoming. After World War II ended, Custer descendants sold their holdings to ranchers around the county who continued using the land for grazing purposes until it was donated to Maricopa County by founder James Gifford Wright in 1959. At first gun magazines only published hunting and target shooting bulletins; however, over time they began publishing general interest issues as well. Magazines typically ceased publication after a year or two because new technology made printing larger print runs more difficult; however they continued to be published electronically until 2006). In 1907 The Shooting Times magazine Ltd., which was based in London but printed its issues at an armory on Clark Street NW in Washington D1C., announced plans to open a plant adjacent to Pima Air National Guard Base south of Tucson so that it could produce both military and civilian ammunition products used by military forces all across North America (the paper closed down several years later). This followed similar announcements from other American media outlets including Hearst Newspapers Incorporated's Daily News (later called USA Today) about plans for similar plants throughout North America starting up around this time period (see www.archivesofthetimesonline.com/gunmagazinehistory). On July 4th 1916 news spread through Prescott about an unconfirmed report that German soldiers had killed twelve people inside a munitions depot northeast of town – Prescott soon erupted into violence with shots being fired from various parts of town before police arrived; these shootings caused public outcry against any possible German involvement . Colonel HJ McIntyre commanding 3rd Cavalry Regiment ordered his men not to fire on civilians if they saw them . By mid-August 1916 government investigations discovered no evidence linking any Germans with this incident . At approximately this time word got out that $5 million worth of arms were unaccounted for following World War I battlefield losses –panic ensued among some businesses owners who may have invested their money with Germany during this tumultuous time
