During this time period there were several attempts by settlers to establish a permanent presence in what is now Maricopa County; these failed due to lack of interest or support from local officials or residents. The first real effort at ranching took place around 1870 when John Charles Fremont organized a group led by his brother George Washington Fremont that established three ranches east of downtown Tucson on parcels currently occupied by Tempe Municipal Airport and Scottsdale Municipal Airport respectively. Ranching activity picked up rapidly throughout the next few decades until World War II brought a halt to development and destroyed many unwanted buildings along with thousands of acres (meter)2of prime agricultural land within Maricopa County’s borders which would have been used for cattle production had they not been confiscated by war hysteria following Pearl Harbor attacks on December 7th 1941.
