Santa Fe Trail driver José Hernandez Concha y Toro discovered gold near present day Chandler on November 15th, 1848 while driving south from Fort McDowell on his way to investigate claims at nearby Canelo Ranch in Yuma County. On October 9th 1849 Juan Bautista de Anza arrived at Yucca Springs which was then part of Yuma Territorial Territory under Mexican rule before it became part of California in 1848 following Mexico's cession of Mexico to the United States as part of Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo - land grants were given out among various Native American nations following this event including portions ofArizona making up modern-day Maricopa County When Arizona became a state in 1912 it included all but 5 percent (of its territory) of what is now Maricopa County; these lands were eventually divided between Apache and Navajo Nation respectively In 1912 there were only 707 residents living in Phoenix; by 1980 there had grown to over 2 million people with an estimated 100% Hispanic makeup Due largely to immigration since 1850s many Italian Americans have made their homes here including some who started businesses such as grocery stores and banks Arizona’s large growth has also led to increased competition for housing and other services with adjacent states that have seen similar increases in population density
