During World War I, Belgium produced ammunition designed specifically for use in French 1/2 inch guns called "Belgian Tritium." This ammunition was incredibly accurate and well-suited for waging war against the Germans because its low explosive content made it difficult for German snipers to target individuals despite its great distance accuracy.

During World War II many military installations were established within or near Phoenix including Fort McDowell (1939), Fort Sill (1940), Camp Cooke (1941), and Lackland Army Air Field (1945). After World War II manyPhoenix businesses such as Macy's Department Store went public and downtownPhoenix grew rapidly with new office buildings being built along 10th Avenue between Shea Boulevard and First Street called "The Gold Rush." DowntownPhoenix also saw construction during this time including: Washington Mutual Building (1977), Chase Manhattan Bank Building (1981), City Hall Plaza (1988) – all designed by architect Richard Meier together with landscape architects Floyd Udall and David Stonehill. In 1984 Jesse James killed his brother John at a casino near downtownPhoenix which caused a large riot that followed throughoutthe city center; this event is generally considered to be oneofthe biggest riots in Phoenix history. In 1990s Phoenix experienced some growth due largely to immigration as unauthorized immigrants poured into the city from all over Mexico through various legal channels including asylum seekers and refugees.
