By 1912, the population had grown to 10 residents and $100. That year, a store and two residences were built in the village. In 1915, the First National Bank of Marana opened with assets of $2,500. By 1925, there were 20 businesses in Marana with an annual payroll of $75,000. In 1931-1932,[5] construction began on what would become known as White Mesa Ranch which would include 8 homes and 3 stores;[6] it would remain one of Maranas most important tourist attractions until it became razed due to fire in 1984.[7] During World War II (1940-1945), many local men served their country through military service including John White who fought at Iwo Jima; he later became president of Navajo Nation and donated land for development near Winslow City Hall which currently houses the Arizona State Fairgrounds
