The Marana, Arizona town of Marana is located in Pinal County, about 25 miles south of the city of Phoenix. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Marana was founded by Mexicans in 1887 as a small agricultural center on the Gila River. In 1912, it became a town and was named for José María de la Garza y Ortiz, an Mexican nationalist who had helped found Arizona. According to the 2010 census, the population of Marana is 613. Of that number, 471 are Hispanic or Latino (of any race). The remainder are white men over 50 and women over 50. There are no children under 18 living in Marana households. The median age in Marana is 42 years old; 43% of residents are between the ages of 15 and 24; and only 2% are over 80 years old. There are 9 churches in Marana with services ranging from preaching to social work. There also exists a library which has a wide variety of books including Spanish-language titles

The towns of Flagstaff and Window Rock were founded in Marana during this time. The town of Marana was founded on the banks of the Verde River in 1892. The name originated from an Apache Chief's pronouncement that "Marana means green pastures." In 1912, Marana became a city and was named for Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1922, Arapaho Indians living in the area attacked human beings and horses near Flagstaff, killing six people and wounding many others. This event is considered to be the beginning of World War II. Flagstaff played an important role during World War II as it served as both a military base and airfield for American planes fighting in Europe and Asia. Many buildings located here still survive today including Air Force Station 2nd Lt.(jg) Charles Fenton's home which he designed and built himself, Hangar No. 3 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord which housed America's first jet airliner squadron (the Douglas DC-3), North Field airstrip used by RAF Bomber Command during WWII, and much more. A major development taking place within Flagstaff during this time was Texas School for Math, Science & Technology (TSMST), one of only two schools operated by Texas Instruments Corporation (TI) outside of Houston TX until its dissolution in 1997 following TI's bankruptcy proceedings that year. TSMST had been established with a $5 million gift from Jack Welch – CEO/President at TI – making it one of TI’s largest gifts ever given to an educational institution at any point in its history.[1] TSMST would become known as Northern Arizona University after being accepted into UT Tucson’s school system; however campus operations continued under TI’s ownership until 1994 when UT Tucson changed its affiliation to Arizona State University effective July 1st due to state budget cuts affecting higher education statewide[2]. ASU then transferred all TSMST materials from their downtown storage facility into Tempe’s new Forsyth Museum Campus building starting September 1st, 1995 - marking what has come to be known as “The Day After” due to widespread chaos on campus resulting from numerous staff layoffs prior to that date[3]. Following ASU’s acquisition by The University Company (UA) on August 15th 2004,[4], TSMST operations moved back under UA control before ending formally our affiliation with ASU on February 17th 2005[5].
