Marana, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Marana" means "protected place." The first settler in Marana was Hosea Wright in 1887. He and his family were farmers and ranchers until they moved to Marana in 1913. At that time, Marana had a population of only seventy-six people. In 1957, construction began on the Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Toll Road which connected Phoenix with Tucson and now forms the eastern edge of Marana's downtown district. In 1850, Marana was named after Dona Ana García de Alvarado y Pacheco, widow of alcalde Francisco Villa—the first Hispanic woman to own property in Arizona. She donated 640 acres (2 km2) of land east of Tucson to the U.S., becoming one of the largest donors ever made to American soil. After her death in 1868, her husband bequeathed another 534 acres (1 km2) to America as well as his homebuilt adobe castle known today as Villa del Rey on Deer Valley Road outside Phoenix. Arizona's annexation by United States followed shortly thereafter; when Congress passed a bill declaring Arizona “an Territory within the United States” on February 14th, 1912 it included Marana along with all other Apacheland County properties within newly formed Mohave County (later Yuma County). On March 15, 1912, Marana was founded by the Arizonan brothers Oscar and Lorenzo. The village was named for a nearby watercourse. The town's first post office opened in 1913. A school and a few homes were built in 1915 before the town was closed due to lack of funding. The town re-opened in 1916 as a cattle ranch stop on the Arizona Central Railroad. In 1920, the railroad changed its name to the Arizona Central Railway Company and Marana became part of that company's subsidiary, the Arizona Western Railway Company. In 1948, Marana became an independent city when it merged with neighboring towns of Apache Junction and Sahuarita. In 1959, after years of discussion between Tucson and Phoenix over how to handle Navajo Indian reservations within their cities limits, Marana voters passed a resolution petitioning for incorporation into Phoenix as an unincorporated community free from city restrictions. On July 1, 1959, incorporation took place at what is now Mesa Verde Municipal Airport. Phoenix annexed Marana on August 16th making it one of its newest neighborhoods outside downtownPhoenix
