The Marana area was first settled by the Navajo in the mid-19th century. In 1887, a group of Spanish settlers called the Villa de los Angeles arrived in the area and established a rancho. The name of the rancho is still used today to describe a small tract of land near present day Marana. The early pioneers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and squash for their own consumption and for trade with other groups in the region. By 1907, most of what is now Marana had been purchased from the Mexican government by Anglo ranchers. The town started as a small farming community with about 125 residents. By 1923, when it became a city, Marana had grown to over 1,500 people. Population growth continued during World War II as Marana served as an important military base and post office. After the war ended, many Maranas left for various reasons including poverty or distance from family members in Phoenix or Tucson. Many returned after years of effort but not all were successful entrepreneurs; some became landlords or professionals while others did nothing more than work on their farms until they died old age. Today, there are over 810Maranas living in various parts of Arizona Territory including Douglas County where much of downtown stands vacant due to construction projects that have taken up space within walking distance of every house since 2007! The history of Marana has been packed full of events such as floods (1948), earthquakes (1965), fires (1964), hurricanes (1982 & 1992), oil spills (1992-1994) and numerous other tragedies which have dramatically shaped who we are as a community today. While these events have changed our landscape permanently and affected our daily lives in ways we cannot ignore or forget - they also provide us with an opportunity to look back at how we got here, how we’ve responded to challenges throughout history and see how far we’ve come since then - even though parts remain challenging still!
The Marana Apache Tribe is a federally recognized tribe located in the Marana Valley of Arizona. The tribe was founded in 1868 and has resided on the reservation since 1912. The tribe has an estimated population of over 1,000 people. On December 14, 1959, the tribal government was dissolved and all remaining assets were placed into trust for future generations.
